International Conference on Disabilities in Africa (ICDA)
We invite you to join us for the International Conference on Disabilities in Africa (ICDA), hosted online biennially by the International School of Disability Studies. ICDA creates a space where researchers, academics, law/policy makers, care professionals, activists, disabled individuals, their families and anyone interested in disability matters from around the world come together to share and debate research, ideas and developments in the field of disability studies in Africa. On this page, you can register to attend the online conference and submit an abstract if you wish to present.

Presentations and discussions will focus on topics and/or research exploring the experiences of disabled people and their relatives in Africa during the COVID Pandemic and post-pandemic periods. Topics and research will shed light on the social, health, cultural and economic implications of COVID-19 for disabled people, lessons learnt, coping strategies employed and/or how individuals, carers and governmental and non-governmental services and organisations adapted during the pandemic.

Attending
Attending the conference is free of charge, but registration is required. Attendees will receive a certificate of attendance. As this is an online conference, please ensure you have installed Zoom on your device and have a good internet connection on the day to minimise disruption. We are arranging to have physical streaming locations where individuals without internet can attend the conference locally.
Programme and Speakers
The conference programme, confirmed speakers, Zoom meeting link, and streaming locations will be emailed to all registered conference participants.
Presentations
Those who wish to present at the conference should indicate so on the registration form and details of their presentation and abstracts will be required on the form. If accepted, a timeslot will be allocated and your presentation can be made live on the day or as a recorded video to be played on the day. Video recording guidelines will be provided to accepted presenters.
Abstracts and Publications
Abstracts will be required from all presenters when registering for the conference. This should be no more than 300 words (not including the title) and can consist of the following structure: Title, Background, Methods, Results, Conclusions and Reference list. Please include names, contact details and affiliations for all authors. Also indicate if you would like to submit a full paper for publication in our journal.

Summary:
Discussions and conference submissions would focus on how disabled people can be empowered to become more visible and actively included in their respective communities in Africa. Topics can include empirical or non-empirical work related to best practices; education, skills acquisition, and how these can be or have been applied in the African context. We also welcome presentations on any topic related to empowerment and disabilities (i.e., intellectual disability, vision Impairment, autism spectrum disorder, deaf or hard of hearing, mental health conditions, physical disability etc).

Summary:
We are delighted to invite you to attend the first International Conference on Disabilities in Africa (ICDA), on the 28th of July 2018, taking place at Nordic Hotel, in Abuja, Nigeria to mark the launch of the International School of Disability Studies (ISDS) in Nigeria. The theme of the conference is: “Visible but invisible: towards a new perspective on disability in Africa”. Discussions and conference submissions would focus on how to overcome the stigma associated with disability and exploring new approaches to improving the quality of life of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in Africa.
