About the course

This course develops your understanding of the principles of social research and related philosophical discussions. People who take this course will also develop basic skills in the use of both quantitative and qualitative research techniques and begin to judge what methods and techniques are appropriate to specific research problems/questions. You can also complete an optional research project.

  • Social research – quantitative and qualitative methodology
  • Exploring qualitative and quantitative research approaches and strategies
  • Introduction to social research ethics and data analysis
  • Judge and evaluate the validity/quality of published research evidence
  • Develop research questions and conduct exploratory work based or literature based report

  • 9:00 am – 10:45 am – Online lecture and discussion task
  • 10:45 am – 11:00 am – Break
  • 11:00 am – 12:45 pm – Online lecture and written task
  • 12:45 pm – 1:45 pm – Lunch Break
  • 1:45 pm – 3:00 pm – Online lecture and reading task
  • 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Presentation task and Q&A

Assessment

  • Research Project: This allows you to design and undertake a small-scale work-based or literature-based research project report related to your interests in the field of disability, mental health and inclusion. The project requires you to develop a research question, initiate, conduct and present your findings in a report format. The work is conducted to deadlines agreed upon with the course facilitator and the project must include evidence of knowledge and understanding emanating from the sessions covered throughout the course as well as a critical appraisal of topics covered in the report.
